News broke in February that wealthy British expats living in South Africa were set to be hit hard by sweeping tax increases that would be announced in the country’s budget.
On 22 February, South Africa’s finance minister Pravin Gordhan was expected to unveil across-the-board tax hikes to the marginal rate of income tax, where the top rate may reach as high as 45%, up from 41%.
It was also predicted he would increase estate duty and tax on donations between spouses to increase tax collection on intergenerational wealth transfers.
