Six long-term economic trends changing the investment world

With the global population booming, the ‘pillars of a functioning economy’ are set to undergo major changes, says Sanlam Four’s Mike Pinggera. Here, he looks at the six biggest themes for investors to watch.
In transport, the age of air travel shows no sign of ending anytime soon with a surge in global air traffic shown over the last 20 years.
Driven by population growth and increased affordability, the revenue passenger kilometres have grown at 5.8% over the last 12 years.
Passenger numbers could double again by 2013 if forecasts made by the IATA ring true.
Pinggera says: “In order to meet demand growth, airlines have increasingly employed leasing. Financing companies have been acquiring and leasing aircraft to facilitate airline fleet growth and capacity expansion.”
