Six long-term economic trends changing the investment world

With the global population booming, the ‘pillars of a functioning economy’ are set to undergo major changes, says Sanlam Four’s Mike Pinggera. Here, he looks at the six biggest themes for investors to watch.
Ensuring water is available to a growing population will become more challenging.
As one of the world’s most important resources, scarcity is already a common problem in many regions and is expected to become more strained as the impact of climate change hits.
Demand for water in agricultural, industrial and domestic use is also expected to rise.
Pinggera says: “The pickup in urban growth has also resulted in increases in the generation of wastewater. This presents opportunities for treatment and recycling – an underexploited resource.
“Desalination facilities are another modern solution to help tackle shortages.”
