Ten challenges facing global asset managers
By Mark Battersby, 6 Jan 16
In the latest in a series of viewpoints from prominent industry figures, Nigel Watson, sales director of VAM Funds, sets out what he sees as the key challenges and opportunities for global asset managers in 2016 and beyond.
Price transparency
Asset managers must provide charging structures that suit their clients. There is no doubt that opaque charging structures are on their way out and this is a good thing.
As costs become more transparent at the advice, investment/fund and wrapper or platform level, so they too come under downward pressure.
Fees must always be justified and for active asset managers like VAM, particularly with competition from lower-cost passive strategies, that means providing funds that offer real value to investors, whether through outperformance and alpha, diversification and low correlation or meaningful differentiation or service provision in other ways, for instance by effectively providing discretionary fund management solutions.
