Nine strategic bond funds for all situations
By Kristen McGachey, 23 May 16
The ‘go anywhere’ approach of strategic bond funds has been a big hit with investors in recent years and big calls across the fixed-income spectrum are now having a huge influence on returns.
Funds to watch: 3-year performance
- Taking the lead on the SPW Strategic Investment Grade Bond Fund is Craig Veysey (pictured) who has 14 years’ investment experience. This fund was launched four years ago and Veysey has been responsible for Sanlam direct bond holdings since joining in 2009. Employing a total return approach, the fund has a bias towards quality both in corporate and developed government bonds, opportunistically investing in high yield and emerging markets.
- Founded in 2008, TwentyFour Asset Management has quickly established itself as a fixed-income specialist and is now managing around £6bn. The TwentyFour Dynamic Bond Fund is its calling card in representing the breadth and depth of expertise and resource. Benchmarking against short-term cash on deposit, this fund invests across the whole spectrum of the fixed-income asset class from government bonds to asset-backed securities.
- Artemis High Income Fund unites an experienced fixed-interest team with UK equity income fund managers to target an above-average income and long-term capital growth. Essentially, this is a bond fund with an equity kicker representing 16% of the portfolio and boasting 6.4% distribution yield. There is a large non-investment-grade proportion currently sitting at around 56% of the fund.
