Another footballing forward who fell foul of the tax authorities was Neymar, who was cleared of criminal charges this week in a long-running tax evasion case in Brazil.

Embroiled in the case for four years, Neymar da Silva Santos Junior was charged with evading BRL63m (£15.3m, $19.9m, €17.1m).

He was found guilty and ordered to repay BRL188.8m in fines and back taxes. This sum was later cut in half on appeal.

Separate criminal charges were finally dropped on Wednesday.
