Henderson Global Investors is building up its emerging market investment capabilities as it prepares to launch products catering to that asset class.

The UK-headquartered investment manager has named Steve Drew as the head of emerging market credit and has also announced plans to hire an investment team to support him

Drew was most recently a partner and head of global and emerging credit at Thames River Capital, which was bought by F&C Asset Management in 2010, and also brings with him more than 20 years of global credit experience across buy and sell-side businesses such as JP Morgan Chase and Tudor Capital.

He will work alongside Stephen Thariyan, global head of credit, and Phil Apel, head of fixed income. The fund house manages assets worth £17.28bn (€20.77bn, $28.62bn) within its fixed income business as of the end of December.

Thariyan hopes this appointment will help the firm to expand the scale of its fixed income franchise globally.

“During 2014 we plan to hire an investment team specialising in emerging market credit to support Steve. This will give us the background to launch products in the area,” he said.

As of 31 December, Henderson manages £68.5bn worth of assets on behalf of clients in the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific and North America.
