Axa Life Singapore ordered to pay $3m over bad reference

By Kirsten Hastings, 16 Aug 17

Axa Life Insurance Singapore has been ordered by the country’s High Court to pay compensation to a former employee for providing an unflattering reference to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (Mas) and his prospective employer, Prudential Assurance Company Singapore.

Axa Life Insurance Singapore has been ordered by the country’s High Court to pay compensation to a former employee for providing an unflattering reference to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (Mas) and his prospective employer, Prudential Assurance Company Singapore.

Krishnan told the court that he had also reached out to other insurance companies, including Manulife, Aviva, HSBC, Great Eastern and AIA, but he was rejected.

He contacted his local MP in July 2012, worried that he would no longer be able to find work in the financial advisory and insurance industry. Prompted by the MP, Mas wrote to Krishnan and outlined its concerns.

Krishnan claimed to the court that he had not been aware the regulator had these concerns until he received the letter on 31 August 2012.

Legal action

On 30 November 2012, Krishnan took Axa to court claiming defamation, malicious falsehood and negligence.

All three claims were dismissed on 6 May 2015.

Krishnan successfully appealed the decision in July 2016, with the final judgment handed down on Monday.

A spokesperson for Axa said the company is currently seeking legal advice about the court decision, reports newswire Reuters.
