Best and worst countries for expats

Europe

Perhaps a less likely destination, given recent events and a protracted and potentially hostile negotiations period, Europe fared relatively well in the survey with four countries among the top 10.

A newcomer in Expat Insider’s 2015 survey, where it ranked third, Malta climbed to second in 2016 after placing in the top 10 in every index. The Mediterranean country performed best in the ‘Ease of Settling In’ index, coming fourth overall.

However, only 22% of expats in Malta were completely satisfied with their work/life balance, down from 27% in 2015.

In terms of popularity, Malta was followed by Austria (8), Luxembourg (9), and the Czech Republic (10).

The least popular European destination, perhaps unsurprisingly, was Greece, which sat second-last among expats surveyed. The country performed better in the ‘Ease of Setting In’ index but worse in all of the other indices, compared with last year.

Italy was the only other European country in the bottom 10, sitting at 59. However, Ireland also proved unpopular (56), as did Denmark (50).
