US in the news: CIBC’s wealth arm acquires family office

A round-up of the latest people moves and M&A deals in North America

M&A

CIBC Private Wealth Management

The North American bank has bought Lowenhaupt Global Advisors (LGA), a family office in St Louis and New York.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Lowenhaupt team provides independent advice on family wealth transfer, taxation, estate planning and probate, investment portfolio allocation and business structuring.

Law firm Lowenhaupt & Chasnoff remains independent and was not part of the deal.

Peapack-Gladstone Bank

The subsudiary of Peapack-Gladstone Financial has acquired New Jersey-based registered investment adviser (RIA) Point View Wealth Management.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Point View founder David Dietze will remain as president and chief investment strategist, and Claire Toth will continue as vice president and chief operating officer.

The entire team will join Peapack Private Wealth Management.

Mercer Global Advisors

The wealth manager has acquired New Mexico-based RIA Sage Future Financial.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sage Future Financial serves approximately 45 high net worth families with assets under management of around $100m (£81.2m, €90.5m).

The acquisition brings the number of Mercer Advisors offices to 44 and increases its total assets under management to over $16.5bn.

People moves

J O Hambro Capital Management (JOHCM)

The British asset manager has named Nick Good as chief executive of its US business.

Good will join JOHCM on 2 December 2019 and be based at the firm’s Boston office.

He was most recently executive vice president, chief growth and strategy officer at State Street.

B Riley Financial

The US firm has appointed Chuck Hastings as president of its wealth management subsidiary.

Hastings makes the move from B Riley Financial’s asset management affiliate, where he acted as director of wealth management strategic initiatives and portfolio management.

As president of B Riley Financial Wealth Management, Hastings will oversee 160 advisers operating in 13 states.

CFA Institute

The global association of investment management professionals has named Margaret Franklin as president and chief executive.

Diane Nordin has become chair of the board of governors, and Daniel Gamba now serves as vice chair of the board of governors.

Franklin was most recently president of BNY Mellon Wealth Management in Canada and head of international wealth management in North America.

RBC Wealth Management

The wealth manager has hired the Matalon Financial Group to be based in its New York and Boca Raton, Florida, offices.

It joins RBC Wealth Management from Ameriprise Financial.

Matalon Financial Group is composed of:

  • Scott Matalon, managing director – financial adviser, who has 16 years of industry experience;
  • Timothy Hilton, vice president – financial adviser, who has 18 years of experience;
  • Christopher Loria, vice president – financial adviser, who has three years of experience;
  • Christine Henry, senior registered client associate; and
  • William Stranges, senior investment associate.

Matalon, Loria and Henry will be based in the Boca Raton office and Jericho, New York office and will report to Turner.

Hilton and Stranges will be based in the midtown New York office.

Also, the firm has appointed Richard Cacciapaglia and Rama Gali as senior vice president and financial adviser, and Houston branch director, respectively.

Cacciapaglia joins from UBS, while Gali joined RBC Wealth Management earlier this year.

BNY Mellon Wealth Management

The firm has named Chris Roy as a senior client strategist in Boston.

Before joining BNY Mellon Wealth Management, Roy served as a managing director at Boston Private.

UBS Financial Services

James Patrick and John D’Amico have joined the wealth firm as financial advisers in its Mill Valley, California office.

Both were previously at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.

Together, they serve clients in San Francisco area and provide wealth management solutions and advice.

Caliber Financial Partners

The New Jersey-based financial planner has appointed Erin Janides as director of operations.

Previously, Janides served as an internal wholesaler for Triloma Securities.

US Bank Wealth Management

It has named Eric Sanderson as senior managing director of family office services for Ascent Private Capital Management.

In his role, Sanderson will be based in Ascent’s Denver office.

He rejoins the company after serving as managing director of wealth strategy at Ascent from August 2011 to March 2015.

Most recently, he served as the head of wealth planning and family enterprise solutions for Bank of the West.
