OMI warns UAE bulls on ‘bumpy ride’
By International Adviser, 2 Nov 17
Old Mutual International is warning of the risks in the attitude shift after researchers discovered UAE investors are more focused on achieving investment gains than on protecting against losses.
Hope for gains overtake caution
Investors placing greater importance on investment gains rather than on protecting against losses is the reverse of a year ago when 82% of investors said investment gains where important or very important, and 87% of investors said protecting assets to be important or very important.
Now 89% of investors consider investment gains to be important or very important, and 79% of investors consider protecting assets to be important or very important.
UAE investors return expectations shows expectations remain optimistic in the region despite two-thirds of investors claiming to have lowered their expectations over the last 12 months, the study observes.
A high proportion of investors are expecting strong returns in 2017 with 29% of investors in the region expecting investment returns over 10%. This seems even more optimistic based on the actual returns investors said they received in 2016 – which averaged 5.1%.
