Hong Kong consumers continue to have a pessimistic outlook, according to the latest City University poll conducted between late September and early October.

Hong Kong consumers continue to have a pessimistic outlook, according to the latest City University poll conducted between late September and early October.

The Hong Kong consumer confidence index for the third quarter was 82.3 points out of 200. A score of 0 means a person has “no confidence at all”, while 100 is neutral, and 200 indicates “complete confidence”.

More than a thousand adults took part in the poll, which improved by 2.1% over the previous quarter’s reading.

Confidence in commodity prices dropped 3% from the previous quarter to 55.9, while for housing purchases it was a similar fall, by 3.4 % to give a reading of 49.4.

People were close to neutral on living standards (107.7) and employment (100.7), but they expected the situation in both areas to worsen in the coming months.

The City University of Hong Kong first started compiling the consumer confidence index in 2008, surveying people’s present attitudes and their outlook for the next three months.

The survey asked questions about the economy, the job market, commodity prices, living standards, housing purchases and stock investments.

Those people aged 35 years old and under, demonstrated the highest consumer confidence in all six areas.
