Non-Doms: The New Political Battleground

By International Adviser, 10 Apr 15

Some commentators were prompted to say that the election battle began in earnest earlier this week, with Ed Miliband’s announcement Labour will do away with the rules which provide for the remittance basis of taxation in the UK.

Will abolishing the non-dom rules result in a fairer society and is it a good idea?

Will abolishing the non-dom rules result in a fairer society and is it a good idea?

Well, no, because you cannot have a fairer society without the money to spend on things which make society fairer.

There can be little doubt that a significant number of RNDs would leave the UK, less would come, and a significant tax take would be lost.

Add to that the amount spent in the UK economy by RNDs on employment, services and general consumption, and it is hard to understand how anyone could perceive making the UK less attractive to these people is a good idea.
