execs complete finance centre hires gibraltar

19 Aug 13

The Government of Gibraltar has hired a further two senior executives in newly-created roles to promote Gibraltar’s financial services sector.

The Government of Gibraltar has hired a further two senior executives in newly-created roles to promote Gibraltar’s financial services sector.

Victor Galliano will be based at the Gibraltar government’s London outpost, Gibraltar House, on the Strand, while Gibraltar-based Philip Canessa will focus there on promoting the jurisdiction’s funds and investment services.

The Government said in a statement that the appointments reflected the investment it was making to “properly equip its Finance Centre team with the resources they require".

Canessa and Galliano will take up their new roles in September, and will work closely with earlier-appointed colleagues Mike Ashton and Paul Astengo.

All four will report to  Finance Centre director James Tipping.

Most recently Canessa had been a non-executive director of Gibraltar-based investment specialist Burren Capital Advisors. He is described as having had 30 years’ of experience in Gibraltar’s financial services sector. He is the brother of Peter Canessa, who is director of Gibraltar House; Patrick, a lawyer at Triay & Triay, and honorary consul for Italy; and Paul, head of the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority. A cousin, Guy, is in the marketing department of Finance Centre.

Galliano’s most recent position was with HSBC in New York, where he marketed research on Latin America to hedge funds and other asset managers. Altogether he has some 25 years’ of experience in financial services.

The executives’ appointment comes as Gibraltar finds itself in the midst of a diplomatic row, which began as a protest by Spanish fisherman that escalated into a debate over sovereignity.
