HSBC Global Asset Management has appointed Bill Maldonado as chief investment officer, Asia-Pacific.

HSBC Global Asset Management has appointed Bill Maldonado as chief investment officer, Asia-Pacific.

Maldonado, who will retain his current responsibility as strategy CIO, equities, will oversee the investment strategies in Asia where the company has $72bn of assets under management. He will relocate from London to Hong Kong in August and will continue to report to global CIO, Chris Cheetham.

Joanna Munro, CEO of Asia-Pacific, HSBC Global Asset Management, to whom Maldonado reports locally, said: “The importance of Asia within our emerging markets and overall business strategy is underlined by this decision to bring one of our global investment heads to take on an expanded role as Regional CIO.”

Maldonado, who holds a doctorate in laser physics from Oxford University, began his career in the asset management industry in 1993 when he joined HSBC Global Asset Management as a European derivative-based portfolio manager.
