Half of Brit expats in Spain to vote Tory

27 Jun 11

Nearly half of British expatriates in Spain have said they will be voting for the Conservatives.

Nearly half of British expatriates in Spain have said they will be voting for the Conservatives.

The survey found that of the 80% of expatriates who said they intend to vote, 46% will be voting Tory – more than double the showing for Labour and the Liberal Democrats, which both scored only 20% of the vote each, combined.

However, even though the Spanish expats’ allegiance is clear, 65% believe their vote will still lead Britain to have a hung parliament and 41% think the election result will devalue the pound regardless of which party wins. Furthermore, 76% indicated there was only one pressing issue – the economy.

“Our survey proves it is the economy which is without doubt the big issue of the election,” said Mark O’Sullivan, director of dealing at Currencies Direct.

“Expats living in Spain clearly feel somewhat immune to more day-to-day concerns such as crime, immigration and health, but have felt the impact of the credit crunch on their savings and pensions and want something done about it.

“Sadly, if their predictions for a hung Parliament are realised, they may have some time to wait before decisive action on the economy is delivered.”
