Two charged in fake death scam to claim life insurance

By Kirsten Hastings, 5 Apr 17

A woman and her son have been charged with fraud by UK police for conspiring to fake the mother’s death in Zanzibar in an attempt to claim £140,000 ($174,387, € 163,557) in life insurance.

A woman and her son have been charged with fraud by UK police for conspiring to fake the mother’s death in Zanzibar in an attempt to claim £140,000 ($174,387, € 163,557) in life insurance.

Arafa Nassib and her son Adil Kasim were charged by Birmingham police on Wednesday. They are scheduled to appear before the city’s magistrate’s court on 3 May.

The unnamed insurer referred the case to the City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) in November 2016.

Kasim was arrested on 22 December, with his mother taken into custody on 2 February after she returned to the UK from Canada.

The IFED is a specialist police unit dedicated to tackling insurance fraud across England and Wales.

Funded by members of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Lloyd’s of London, and hosted by the City of London Police, the team acts with operational independence while working closely with the insurance industry.
