smith and williamson hires tineke frikkee

Ex-Newton Higher Income Fund manager Tineke Frikkee is to join Smith & Williamson Investment Management to head up its UK Equity Income Trust.

Ex-Newton Higher Income Fund manager Tineke Frikkee is to join Smith & Williamson Investment Management to head up its UK Equity Income Trust.

Frikkee will take up her post on 1 July working alongside assistant manager Mark Swain, and will also provide input into various charity accounts.

One of the highest-regarded managers in the equity income space, Frikkee managed Newton Higher Income Fund from April 2004 to December 2012, during which time it grew from around £600m to over £2.4bn. She originally joined the firm as an assistant fund manager in 1998.

The appointment follows the announcement in January that Mark Boucher had rejoined Smith & Williamson as head of UK equities, taking up the position of lead manager of its UK Equity Growth Trust and co-manager of the Enterprise Fund with Rupert Fleming.

Nick Hodgson, head of marketing and sales, talked up the firm’s intent to build up its UK equity income franchise.

“It is clear that the demand for equity income will not diminish in the current climate, and this view is supported by the recent IMA industry sales data. We are confident that someone with the calibre and track record of Tineke will put us in a strong position to build our assets in this area.”

He added: “We are offering advisers and wealth managers a relatively small range of investment funds, run by very experienced fund managers on a boutique-basis with their own philosophy and process, unhindered by an over-arching house style. This is where we believe we can add real value.”
